With Japan eliminated from the 2018 World Cup, the Japanese Football Federation decides to create a program to find promising young athletes and prepare them for the 2022 World Cup. Isagi Yōichi, a striker, receives an invitation to participate in this program, just after his team loses its chance to qualify for the national team because he passed the ball to a less experienced teammate at the decisive moment instead of attempting to shoot himself. The coach of the program will be Ego Jinpachi, whose goal is to "destroy the losing Japanese football" with a revolutionary method: isolating 300 young and promising strikers in a prison-like facility called "Blue Lock" and subjecting them to rigorous training aimed at creating "the most selfish and best striker in the world
