The story takes place in the Taisho era in Japan. Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells coal for a living, returns home to find his family massacred by a demon. His younger sister Nezuko, the only survivor, has instead been transformed into a demon. Devastated by the situation, Tanjiro decides to become a "demon slayer" in order to transform his sister back into a human and kill the demon that massacred his family.
