amiibo figures represent a completely new and innovative way to interact with your favorite Nintendo characters and games. These figures have a special chip embedded in them that uses NFC communication technology. By tapping a figure to the right Joy-Con on the Switch, the NFC touchpoint on the Wii U GamePad, the NFC touchpoint on the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, or the NFC Reader/Writer accessory* (for other Nintendo 3DS family systems) while playing certain games, the data on the chip will automatically be transferred to the game, allowing the character, for example, to appear on-screen. While playing certain games, your figure's data will also be updated, so you can make your amiibo truly unique as you continue playing!

Using amiibo is as easy as drinking a glass of water.
The Switch console’s right Joy-Con includes an NFC sensor that allows you to interact with amiibo, as does the Wii U console’s Game Pad. The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL also have a built-in NFC sensor, so you don’t need to purchase any accessories to use amiibo with these two systems.
For the Nintendo 3DS, a special accessory called an NFC reader/writer is available that can "read" the figurines. That said, to use an amiibo in a compatible game, simply place the figurine on the NFC sensor.
Amiibo are unique products and differ from similar products available on the market because they can be used with different games and on different consoles.
